The flags on this wall represent the nationalities of my coworkers--just within my own group! (Another flag had just gotten removed; that's why Canada is over there kind of by itself.)
The other day, I was eating lunch with my coworkers from Bulgaria, India, and South Africa.
South African coworker: "Is that bean curry?"
Me: "No, it's leftover taco soup."
--blank stares from everyone--
Me: "It's kind of like chili."
--more blank stares from everyone--
Me: "...you guys don't know about chili?"
Finally the Bulgarian coworker said, "Oh, I think I've heard of it. Isn't it a South American food?"
I had never considered that there were places in the world where people don't eat chili.
Now that I think about it, I don't remember seeing a Mexican restaurant in Wellington yet. There's a burrito place, but the burritos there are more like healthy wraps than anything Mexican. And in the endless parade of American fast food restaurants, I don't think I've seen a Taco Bell or Taco Time.
Weird.

Poor, deprived, non-taco-soup-eating people. ;) Did you offer to share?
Did you say you would bring it next time there was a pot luck? You should introduce them to sour cream enchiladas!
