Most of the homes here don't have driveways attached, or even roads adjacent to them. The people park on the street or in a nearby car park, and then climb stairs or hills to get to their houses. (I'm fortunate to live in a building with an adjacent car park, but I don't own a car. The ironies of life.)
The picture below was the view from the window of the executive apartment I lived in for a month when I first moved here. From the picture, you would assume I was in a high-rise building looking out over the skyline. Actually, I was on the second floor of a two-story house. You'll notice that it's eye level with the 14th floor of a building a block away. Every time I went down that hill (which was pretty much every day, since everything interesting and/or useful was at the bottom of the hill) I would have to climb MILES of stairs to get back home!
Fortunately, my new apartment is near the bottom of the hill, and I can go around most of the hills to get to work. It takes longer, but it's worth it.

I guess I should quit complaining about my 3 flights, even if I do have to do them several times a day!
