Driving in the Snow

I drove some friends to the airport this morning in their car, since they didn't want to leave their car at the airport for three weeks. I was a little nervous about driving, since (a) I haven't driven a car since March, and (b) earlier in the week the roads were pretty icy. Luckily the ice had all disappeared by this morning. (I can't say it melted off, since the temperature hasn't gotten above 12 degrees all week.) As I was driving back towards town, the rational part of my brain was telling me that I should just take the car back home right away, while the roads were clear, and then take the bus to work like I usually do. The irrational, fun-loving part of my brain said that if I did that, I would be late for work and would then have to stay late, and wouldn't have as much time to do fun stuff later.

As usual, the irrational and fun-loving part of my brain won, and I drove straight to work. While I was at work, we got six inches of snow with a solid layer of ice underneath. The roads are a mess! My coworkers and I tried to go out for lunch together to a nice restaurant but couldn't get up the hill on one of the major roads (all six lanes, three lanes going up and three lanes going down, were blocked by cars that were stuck), so we ended up at a pizza place near work instead. (You might ask where the snow removal crews were while all this was happening. We often ask ourselves the same question. Last year we didn't see a single plow until January.)

I managed to drive the car home okay, but it took about an hour to go four miles and I was SERIOUSLY stressed about it the whole way! Note to self: listen to rational part of brain more often.

Side note: most of my coworkers will probably call in "stuck" tomorrow. (We're supposed to get another 6-8 inches of snow tonight.) I'll be the only one at work, since the buses will be running on time, as usual. Sometimes life's not fair!
