Snow, continued

The college a few blocks from me has posted a 24-hour snow accumulation of 15 inches, with the snow still coming down at a rate of 1.2 inches per hour. As predicted, all of the people in my group at work have emailed to say they're not coming in today, but I'm getting lots of kudos for "holding down the fort."

So I'm doing lots of whining about how I had to come in today, but it's all for show. (Don't tell any of my coworkers.) The truth is that I love riding the bus during a major weather event. There's a party atmosphere, with all the riders applauding everyone as they get on, and people sharing their stories about walking to the bus stop in the waist-high drifts. We were gasping (and some of the guys were cheering) as we watched cars get stuck or wipe out, while our bus (which was a whopping two minutes late) trudged competently through the streets with its 8-wheel drive. There were four people from my company who got off at the same stop I did (which is about three blocks from work), and we took turns leading the way to "blaze the trail" for the others.

But now I'm all alone, and the lights above my cubicle keep going out because there aren't enough people moving around here to convince the sensor that this area is occupied. I'm hoping they let the non-essential employees leave, since most of them didn't come in today anyway.
